Vision

To be the leading center of excellence in medical neuroscience care in the region.

Mission

Providing the highest quality care to patients with brain and spinal disorders.

Conducting translational research on nervous system diseases, and developing innovative surgical therapies and management methodologies.

Teaching neuroscience to doctors and other healthcare professionals.

Values

The medical practices of the staff are ethical and professional.

There is mutual respect among staff members.

The staff strives to achieve excellence in all aspects of medical care, teaching, training, and research.

Background

The Punjab Institute of Neurosciences (PINS) is one of the largest neurological healthcare facilities in the world, serving a population of over 250 million. Ever since its establishment in 1966 by Professor Bashir Ahmad, one of the pioneers of neurosurgery in Pakistan, it has been providing the best possible neurosurgical care to a vast number of routine and emergency patients suffering from head and spine trauma, brain tumor, and stroke. Originally it operated as the Department of Neurosurgery at King Edward Medical College/Mayo Hospital, Lahore. Due to a shortage of beds at Mayo Hospital, Professor Bashir decided to reestablish the Department of Neurosurgery at Lahore General Hospital (LGH) starting in its old barracks. In a short time, a fully equipped neurological spine center was established that included neurosurgery, neurology, neuroanesthesia, neuroradiology, neuropathology, neuropsychiatry, and neurorehabilitation amongst other fields. Since its inception, the institute has evolved into a regional leader in neurosurgery, now housing 500 beds and pioneering surgical techniques while training generations of neurosurgeons and healthcare professionals. Being the only public sector neurosurgical hospital for almost 60 years, it caters to the patient population from all over Pakistan as well as its neighboring countries.

Staff

PINS is currently led by Professor Asif Bashir who is serving as the Executive Director of PINS, Dean of the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan, and member of the Society of Neurological Surgeons, USA. There are three departments of neurosurgery, a dedicated department of neurology, neuropathology, neuroradiology, endovascular neurosurgery, neuroanesthesia, neurorehabilitation and a newly formed department of pediatric neurosurgery. Over 1,000 employees are working at the capacity of PINS that include 102 consultants, 164 postgraduate resident trainees, 393 nursing staff, and 360 paramedical and support staff.

Facilities

Despite being a government-funded institution, PINS has acquired state-of-the-art facilities and equipment. These include endoscopes, drills, microscopes, cavitron ultrasonic surgical aspirators (CUSA), neuronavigation systems, stereotactic systems, microelectrodes, three 128-slice CT machines, two 3T MRI machines, and 3D biplane angiography.

Procedures and Patients

Between the Departments of Neurosurgery and Neurology, PINS recorded a total outpatient inflow of 266,332. Close to 10,000 cases are performed per annum with a total of 5,160 procedures performed in the emergency operating theaters and 4,313 procedures performed in the elective operating theaters. In total, 58,613 radiological investigations were performed at PINS.

-

39th PSN Annual Conference 2026

The 39th PSN Annual Conference 2026 promises to be a landmark event, bringing together neurosurgeons, neuroscientists, trainees, researchers, and industry leaders from across Pakistan. Designed as a hybrid conference, the meeting will offer both in-person and virtual participation, ensuring wider accessibility and engagement for delegates regardless of geographical location.

As a CPSP-accredited scientific event, the conference will provide valuable opportunities for continued professional development while fostering academic excellence and collaboration. The scientific program has been carefully curated to address contemporary advances, emerging technologies, and evolving challenges in neurosurgery.

The conference will feature plenary lectures delivered by distinguished national and international experts, alongside parallel scientific sessions covering diverse subspecialties of neurosurgery. These sessions will provide an ideal platform for the presentation and discussion of innovative research, clinical experiences, and cutting-edge surgical techniques.

A major highlight of the conference is its strong emphasis on academic competition and recognition. Delegates will compete for several prestigious awards, including the Best Oral Presentation Award, Best Poster Presentation Award, Best Rapid Abstract Presentation Award, and Best Operative Video Award. In addition, PSN Resident Quiz Competition will bring together neurosurgical trainees from across the country in a spirited test of knowledge and clinical acumen.

This year, PSN is proud to introduce two distinguished awards recognizing excellence in research. The Prof. O. V. Jooma Award for the Best Young Researcher will celebrate emerging talent and encourage innovation among early-career neurosurgeons. The Prof. Bashir Ahmad Award for the Best Paper of 2025–2026 will honour outstanding scientific contribution and publication in the field of neurosurgery.

Another exciting addition is the NeuroTech Pavilion, where leading universities of science and technology will showcase pioneering developments in artificial intelligence, robotics, biomedical engineering, neuroimaging, and digital health solutions. This unique platform aims to strengthen collaboration between clinicians, researchers, engineers, and innovators, shaping the future of neuroscience and neurosurgical care.

Reflecting PSN's commitment to inclusivity and equitable professional growth, the conference will also feature the PSN Equity Scholarship program, enabling trainees from Tier 2 or Tier 3 training center in underprivileged areas of Pakistan to participate and benefit from this premier academic event.

Together, these initiatives, coupled with the Diamond Jubilee Celebration of Neurosurgery at PINS-LGH, will make 39th PSN conference 2026 far more than a scientific meeting—it is a celebration of heritage, innovation, excellence, education, and collaboration.

Prof. Naghmana Mazher

Chair Organizing Committee
